Welcome to the original 'year in shoes', where Kittie France got to see if she could meet the challenge to wear every pair she owned in the 365 days of 2011
"I never met a Manolo I didn't like." - Kittie France
"You can never have enough hats, gloves and shoes." - Patsy Stone
"I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes, I had one thousand and sixty." - Imelda Marcos

Day 31 - Chateau Chanel
These superb vintage Chanel cork sandals were purchased at Leslie Hindman's fabulous auction house in Chicago in 2010 by a very dear friend of mine, and brought over to Australia where they are enjoying a renaissance as very upscale "drinking sandals". You see, the heels are like champagne corks and have "Chateau Chanel" printed on them, along with the interlocking c's. They are standing outside The European on another hot summer's day after a long lunch, accompanied by Serge Lutens' Fleurs de Citronnier.

Day 30 - Pool cool
On a very hot summer's day, these jewel green satin Kate Spade party sandals are cooling off by the pool, accompanied by one of my favourite fragrances from the nineties (but timeless, and genderless, as all good fragrances are), Bulgari's Eau Parfumee Cologne au The Vert.
Saturday, January 29, 2011
Day 29 - Still life with shoes
Jigsaw beige suede sandals with brown jewel detail and wooden heels posed with gardenia and mango (why not?), worn with L'Artisan Parfumeur Figuier Extreme.
Friday, January 28, 2011
Day 28 - Wild
Superb Jimmy Choo leopard print silk mules basking in the remains of the afternoon sun. They make me think of a wild American woman of my acquaintance who likes to proclaim "leopard is my favorite color!" (Non-Americans, note American spelling). Worn, naturally, with Frederic Malle's Musc Ravageur.

Day 26 - Tennis shoes
Australia Day. The small coral-coloured dot to the right is Rafael Nadal, nicely co-ordinated with my Marc Jacobs fabric sandals with fuchsia patent trim, in the process of being beaten by countryman David Ferrer in the men's quarter-final of the Australian Open. Worn with Guerlain's Vetiver.
Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Day 25 - Leger at leisure
Herve Leger taupe and cream mules with small gold buckle detail and wooden heels, relaxing outside Florentino's on Collins Street. Worn with Histoires de Parfums' Noir Patchouli, bought in Paris but - exciting - now available at Myer Melbourne!
Monday, January 24, 2011
Day 24 - Happy feet
These feet are very happy. Why? Well, snapped dining at France Soir, they were thrilled to be with three of their favourite men in the world, including a very dear and unexpected visitor from America (you know who you are). They were also pleased to be soaking up a bit of Australian Open atmosphere - Amelie Mauresmo was at the next table - perfect for my tennis tragic friend! They are wearing a lovely pair of Vera Wang bronze metallic Mary Janes. Teamed with Dior's great classic Diorella, which I wore for years and years and still return to on occasion.

Day 22 - Lotus blossom
These sublime Kate Spade sandals in inky plum patent leather with sparkly discs in faux amethyst remind me of Egypt. Worn with Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil.
Friday, January 21, 2011
Day 21 - Choo-sy
These lovely Jimmy Choo cream mules were purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue in 2000, and they are still going strong. Cream (and white) are hard shades to wear - unless you're a golfer or a granny - but these always look and feel very elegant. Note peekaboo toe cleavage. Worn with Les Nuits d'Hadrien by Annick Goutal.

Day 19 - Bookish
Browsing books on Collins Street in a pair of classic Prada mules with ruched detail on the vamp. Accompanied by Ambregris Ambre & Diamant Noir.
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
Day 18 - Old troupers
These suede slingback heels from Parisian shoemaker Jonak were purchased in the early noughties. Since then they've really been through the wars - they've walked many miles, been rained on, shopped, partied, and accompanied me to the Melbourne Cup - and they're still working. Worn with L'Artisan Parfumeur Iris Pallida.
Monday, January 17, 2011
Day 17 - Raffish raffia
Hot pink Kate Spade sandals with matching hot pink raffia 'flowers' - very summery. Worn with Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere.
Sunday, January 16, 2011
Day 16 - The Colour Purple
Ah, Mr Blahnik, what a beautiful sandal! These were purchased on sale at Barneys a few years ago and are suede in a rich saturated shade of purple, worn with Parfum Sacre EDP by Caron. Their name is Perle.

Day 15 - Vulgar, vulgar, vulgar
You may recall this was how Fergie was once described by an appalled official from Buckingham Palace. These glamorous creations by Giuseppe Zanotti may well be the Fergies of the (high end) shoe world - strikingly red, heavily jewelled and a bit on the edge of respectability. Purchased on eBay from a lady in New Jersey (Carmela Soprano?) they have everything a glamour heel needs and more - red satin with tips trimmed in red crocodile, set off with gold heels and a jewel-encrusted ankle strap in shades of red, pink and amber. Still, despite all the frou frou, very elegant and a tribute to the shoemaker's art. Worn with Sira des Indes by Jean Patou. Auguri, Giuseppe!

Day 14 - It's raining shoes
It's been pelting down here for days and the backdrop to these sensational gold Pradas is my H&M zebra umbrella. Humidity = bad hair, but I'm ensuring the excellence of the shoes is a compensating factor, as you can see. Worn with Tom Ford's Japon Noir. Nice work, Tom.

Day 13 - Gen X
As a child of the sixties, I remember black and white TV, women with immovable lacquered hair and pants being referred to as "slacks". I also remember shoes like these. They are by Marc Jacobs in patent yellow leather trimmed with gold chain detail and navy patent, and have gold interiors and yellow soles. I fell in love with them at first sight in Bloomingdales on North Michigan Avenue about three or four years ago. At the time I had trouble justifying spending $500 on a pair of statement shoes, however fabulous, so I knew there was a God when our paths crossed again at Macy's sale some months later when they were considerably less expensive. The rest is history. On an almost tropical day, worn with Estee Lauder's Azuree Soleil from some years back, when Tom Ford was curating their fragrances.

Day 12 - Pink
Another triumph from the shoemeister, this time a magnificent pair of exquisitely pink heels with a lovely apricot leather interior - Manolos, of course. These get so many compliments and - naturally - they are wonderful to wear. Worn with Serge Lutens' intoxicating Tubereuse Criminelle.

Day 11 - Striped
You know, when people are bored in Melbourne, they start painting the streets. So, today, on a painted Melbourne laneway, I am pictured wearing a beloved pair of Sergio Rossi mules in two brilliant shades of taupe. Worn with Estee Lauder's classic '80s fragrance, Knowing. When I bought it, the lady at the duty free store at San Francisco airport pronounced with enormous passion: "you will never regret this". So true. Similarly, I have never regretted investing in Sergios.

Day 10 - Shoes and the city
Back to work, feeling very Ayn Rand. Kate Spade beige patent peeptoe slingbacks with black patent perforated trim perched in front of a cityscape - that's St Patrick's Cathedral in the background. Worn with the classic chypre, Dior's Miss Dior EDC (vintage).
Sunday, January 9, 2011
Day 9 - Love you long time
There's something about wearing these Betseyville by Betsey Johnson heels that makes me feel like a Thai streetwalker. I had them marked as disposables in a recent wardrobe clean-out, but some invisible force made me retrieve them from the pile. Why? I think it's because every girl needs a pair of trampy heels in her 'robe. Details: the vamps are fabric, trimmed with bedazzled cherries, the heeltips and soles a Barbie pink. The rest is sort of white lacquer - very satisfying. Worn with Lolita Lempicka's Lolita Lempicka.
Saturday, January 8, 2011
Day 8 - Summer
Brunching on Brunswick Street in these fabulous Marc by Marc Jacobs 70s-style multicoloured sandals (acquired 2008), accompanied by L'Artisan Parfumeur's Fou d'Absinthe.
Friday, January 7, 2011
Day 7 - A Manolo moment
These are the first Manolos I ever owned, and this may be the first time I've actually worn them. Beige suede T-bars with the classic flared heels in tan leather. They really are works of art. Worn with an equally fabulous piece of the perfumer's art, Amouage Jubilation 25.
Thursday, January 6, 2011
Day 6 - Spotted on the street
Isaac by Isaac Mizrahi ponyskin spotted kitten heel mules off Little Bourke Street, worn with Odalisque by Parfums de Nicolai.
Wednesday, January 5, 2011
Day 5 - Back to work
These fetching Pradas are great for those days very pointy shoes are in order for striding around the office. These have little kitten heels, and criss-cross detail featuring tiny silver buckles. I wore them with a Pucci skirt, which was a perfect combination of Italian quirky style. I was wearing the lovely Serge Lutens Cedre.

Monday, January 3, 2011
Day 3 - Flat out shopping
Walked miles today at the sales in these black leather Lanvin flats with cafe au lait satin trim (Ete 2008), accompanied by a discreet cloud of Guerlain's Attrape Coeur. Very French!
Sunday, January 2, 2011
Day 2 - Relaxing Sunday
Sergio Rossi beige mules with lovely subtle metallic heel and small silver buckle. I love Sergios! Worn with Frederic Malle's Angeliques sous la pluie.
Saturday, January 1, 2011
Day 1 - New Year's Day
John Fluevog peeptoe slingbacks in teal with flared black heels (c. 2006) pictured at Ferragamo's home in Fitzroy on New Year's day. I don't know why I don't wear these more often! Worn with L'Artisan Parfumeur's Dzongkha.
New Year's Eve
The day before the new year. Manolo Blahnik black mules with floral and tie detail pictured on Collins Street, Melbourne. Worn with Frederic Malle's Lys Mediterranee.
